Following a two-year development phase, a support program for agroforestry systems is about to be implemented in the national support strategy of Luxembourg. The program was developed and negotiated by the Consulting Institute Landespflege Freiburg in cooperation with experts from the Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology at the Albert-Ludwigs University, the administration in charge, and stakeholders in Luxembourg.

The project aimed to provide farmers with a low-threshold entry into the implementation of agroforestry systems and simultaneously deliver an efficiently implementable and controllable support system. In this way, broader participation in the program and, above all, a noticeable increase in the area effect of the ecological benefits associated with agroforestry systems should be achieved.

With the program, Luxembourg can pioneer the promotion of agroforestry within the European Union. The coming years will show to what extent effective support of agroforestry systems can improve ecology and economy in the agricultural landscape.
