Almost two decades ago, a series of river engineering measures were carried out within the framework of the INTERREG project "Revitalisation of the Taubergießen". These measures aimed to improve the flow of the arms of the Old Rhine and thus to make the river dynamics more natural again.
The effects of the revitalisation measures carried out in 2006 and 2007 were comprehensively investigated in 2021/2022 by the Landespflege Freiburg on behalf of the Freiburg Regional Council. However, flood events of exceptional intensity and duration were recorded during the period in question.
In addition to the unusually long duration of flooding, sediment inputs were registered on a hitherto unknown scale. The surveys carried out by the Landespflege Freiburg in the past two years thus document a highly interesting phase since the implementation of the revitalisation measures.
A repetition of the surveys in 2023 and 2024 should now help to evaluate the effects of the earlier revitalisation measures on the one hand and to better classify the effects of the exceptional flooding events on the other.
