Can profitable land use going along with securing biodiversity for future generations? This central question is relevant also for the recently established Black Forest Biosphere Reserve. Common pastures used cooperatively by the rural community are characteristic in the region. Fertility combined with high degrees of pasture plant biodiversity are essential to maintain common pastures as a permanently basic resource for a healthy livestock.
On behalf of the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve Administration, the Landespflege Freiburg conducts a review of research on impacts of fertilization on plant biodiversity carried out in the region of the current biosphere reserve since the Second World War. We focus on revaluation of the previous results against the background of the current state of research. The work is intended to inform pasture management by evidence based and participative decision making processes.
